Weston

The Weston Village District Coalition was formed as a result of an unusual convergence of circumstances and timing. Approximately fifteen years ago, Weston residents were divided over how to invest in our town's future.  Some felt strongly that our resources should be put toward investing in our schools and infrastructure.  Others wanted to keep an increasingly burdensome tax rate from escalating further. The situation went from mild disagreement to ugly and litigious in short order and the debate raged for far too long in the courts - and in the courts of public opinion.. Almost a half generation later, we find ourselves in a familiar situation.

Having learned from the past, the Weston Village District Coalition was formed by a group of concerned neighbors to talk about what we love about our town, the things that make it characteristically Weston. The primary reasons that most of us moved to town, -- or choose to stay here -- are the amazing public schools we have built and the bucolic, rural and peaceful nature of the town. We value our educators and our open space. And we enjoy a small town that is intimate, familiar and family-friendly.

Much of what we have works beautifully.  Some of it does not.  The Weston Village District Coalition believes that a small and distinct area of town should be defined as our "Village District."  In 1998 the Connecticut General Assembly passed The Village Districts Act, intended to aid municipalities in protecting regions in their towns by empowering zoning commissions.  Within a Village District, all local government, religious, residential and commercial buildings, structures and properties become multi-zoned, empowering Planning and Zoning with narrowly-tailored parameters in to protect the town’s unique character while guiding our growth over time.
